Does prolactin mediate parental and life-history decisions in response to environmental conditions in birds? A review.

This article is part of a Special Issue "Parental Care". In vertebrates, adjustments of physiology and behavior to environmental changes are often mediated by central physiological mechanisms, and more specifically by hormonal mechanisms. As a consequence, these mechanisms are thought to orchestrate life-history decisions in wild vertebrates. For instance, investigating the hormonal regulation ...

Prolactin is related to individual differences in parental behavior and reproductive success in a biparental passerine, the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata).

Variation in parental care can lead to important fitness consequences. The endocrine system is known to regulate physiological and behavioral reproductive traits that are important contributors to lifetime reproductive success. However, the hormonal basis of variation in avian parental care is still not well understood. Plasma prolactin (PRL) concentrations are generally high during post-hatch ...

Modulation of prolactin but not corticosterone responses to stress in relation to parental effort in a long-lived bird.

We tested the hypothesis that parental effort modulates the magnitude of corticosterone and prolactin responses to stress in a long-lived bird, the Black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla). To do so, we compared corticosterone and prolactin responses to capture/restraint stress between chick-rearing birds and failed breeders (no parental effort). We predicted that (1) the increase in plasma co...

Parental care and the prolactin secretion pattern in the King penguin: an endogenously timed mechanism?

The King penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) has been studied on Possession Island, Crozet Archipelago (46 degrees 25'S-51 degrees 45'E). It is an offshore feeder, but it breeds on land. Its breeding cycle is unusually long (about 14 months). It starts at the beginning of spring, is interrupted during 5 months of winter, and ends in the next spring. Furthermore, it is characterized by a long pare...

Parental fanning behavior and prolactin cell activity in the male three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus L.

During the period that sexually mature male three-spined sticklebacks display parental fanning behavior, the rate of synthesis and release of the prolactin cells in the hypophysis, as estimated with quantitative electron microscopy, is enhanced considerably. This finding points to involvement of endogenous prolactin in the regulation of parental fanning behavior in this species.
